2018 Resolutions

2018 is here! Let’s make sure that the new year gets off to a good start, full of energy and good intentions. There is no better time than now to create new goals and commit to being better at managing your diabetes and taking care of your health. 

We know that a badly controlled diabetes can lead to complications and that it is a complex and demanding task. Therefore, it is important that your set specific, realistic and measurable goals. Taking a step-by-step approach and celebrating small improvements is the right strategy. The most important thing is to start! 

The Joslin Diabetes Center, in Boston (United States), shares a series of recommendations that could be used as a template to create your own resolutions for 2018: 

Yearly Goals: 

  • Visit your doctor 2 to 4 times a year. 
  • Follow the exact indications of your diabetes medication. 
  • Check your blood glucose level regularly, before and after eating. 
  • Know and keep track of your cholesterol, blood pressure and AC1. 
  • Do an annual check of renal function and albuminuria tests. 
  • Keep moving. Remember that physical activity is key to keep your glucose under control. 
  • Have an eyesight check-up, including a retinal exam, at least once a year. 
  • Visit your dentist every six months. 
  • Get a flu shot every fall or beginning of winter. 
  • Know the diabetes signs of alarm and be prepared for an either raised or lowered blood sugar. 
  • Jot down all the important check updates in your calendar and commit to comply with them. 

Daily Goals: 

  • Test blood sugar levels as many times as necessary and follow your doctor’s recommendations. 
  • Take your diabetes medications in a timely manner. 
  • Examine your feet in search of cuts or other injuries. 
  • Wash yourself with neutral soap and lukewarm water. 
  • Brush and rinse your teeth regularly. 
  • Walk 30 minutes a day.
