Medical Advisory Board

Our Medical Advisory Board is composed of very experienced and professionals of recognized prestige in the field of diabetes, both in Spain and overseas.
The support of this Committee involves an important back-up to the SocialDiabetes project and reinforces its goal of working towards a quality of life of those with Diabetes, aligning stakeholders involved in its management: the medical community, public and private health systems, large corporations as well as regulatory agents.
The mission of the Advisory Board is to validate and improve the system continuously, and guide in the most appropriate strategy to promote SocialDiabetes as the referral system for the management of Diabetes by patients and professionals.

Dr. Ramón Gomis M.D. PhD

is the Director of the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Professor of Endocrinology at the Universitat de Barcelona, Senior Consultant of the Hospital Clinic, Barcelona and President of the Foundation SED. He is a member of the Academia Europaea and has focused his basic and clinical research on diabetes and obesity, leading his own research group within the framework of the IDIBAS-Hospital Clinic. As a result of his research, he has published more than 300 original articles in the most prestigious scientific journals (The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Diabetes Care, Diabetes, Cell, Diabetología), being author of 4 patents with regard to Obesity, Alzheimer, Haemostasis and the Diagnostic Methodology of type 2 Diabetes.
Moreover, he is author of 21 scientific books chapters addressed to medical students and he has directed 26 Doctoral Theses.
Ramon Gomis has also been President of the Spanish Diabetes Society and member of the Advisory Board of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the European Union of Medical Specialists.

Dr. Fco Javier Ampudia-Blasco

has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valencia (1987, Extraordinary Prize), PhD in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1994, Apto Cum Laude, Extraordinary Prize), Assistant Doctor of the Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolism Service of the University Hospital Clinic of Valencia since November 1994, and Associate Lecturer of the Medical Department since 1999.
He has won several research grants and awards, highlighting his researcher stay in the Abteilung für Stoffwechsel und Ernährung, MNR Klinik und Poliklinik der Heinrich-Heine Universität, Düsseldorf (Prof. Michael Berger, 1992-1994). He is author of several originals, scientific book chapters and co-editor of a number of monographs and books.
Between 2005-2010, he was the Director of Avances en Diabetología, the official journal of the Spanish Diabetes Society, and he is currently reviewer of Avances en Diabetología, Endocrinología y Nutrición, Revista Clínica Española, Annals of Medicine, Clinical Endocrinology, Diabetes Care, Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, Diabetic Medicine, Diabetología, Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, and Metabolism, Journal of Diabetes Complications, Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, Metabolism, and The International Journal of Clinical Practice.

Dra. Sara Artola Menéndez

has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the UAM (1979) and a qualification of Educational Commission Foreign Medical Graduates, (ECFGM) in 1980. She is an Internal Medicine specialist, and carried out the M.I.R. at the Hospital Clínico de Madrid (1984). Since 1989, she works as a Family Doctor at the C. Salud Hereza-Madrid and since 2008 as mentor of Family and Community Medicine residents, as well as teaching work in several congresses, workshops, courses and meetings on diabetes.
She is a member of a number of professional societies such as MGSD, RedGDPS, SoMaMFyC, SED, SEMI and PCDE-EASD StuDY Group. She is also a member of the Board of the Spanish Diabetes Society (SED) between 2006-2010 and is Coordinator of the RedGDPS (2009-2014) and Scientific Coordinator of the National Strategy of Diabetes of the National Health System (2010).
Author of publications in relevant scientific books and journals, nationals and internationals, such as: Primary Care Diabetes, Med Clin, Av Diabetol, Diabetes Care, Int J Clin Pract, Diabetes Práctica y Endocrinol Nutr. Researcher in the Seguridad Cardiovascular de BI 10733 de Boehringer (2009) project and in the PREDAPS study of the RedGDPS (2011).

Dra. Anna Novials MD, MPH

is an Endocrinologist in the Hospital Clínico de Barcelona and Director of the Diabetes and Obesity Laboratory of the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS). She is also currently Subdirector of the CIBER of Diabetes and Enfermedades Metabólicas Asociadas (CIBERDEM), Vicepresident of the Spanish Society of Diabetes (SED) and Council Member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Her main lines of research are focused on the change and destruction of the Beta pancreatic cell, and the impact of lifestyle (exercise and nutrition) in the prevention and treatment of the diabetes. Dra. Novials took her doctorate degree at the Universidad de Barcelona and took up postgraduate training at the University of Cambridge. She has won prestigious awards, including the Leandre Cervera of Endocrinology, the Mutual Médica of the Academia de Ciències Mèdiques de Catalunya, and that of Basic Research of the SED.

F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer MD

Xavier Pi-Sunyer, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and is co-Director of the NIH-supported New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center. After receiving his BA in 1955 from Oberlin College, Dr. Pi-Sunyer went on to complete an MD from Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1959 and an MPH from Harvard University School of Public Health in 1963. He has served as president of the American Diabetes Association, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, as well as a Councilor of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.
He has been a Fellow of the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health, a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Task Forces on Opportunities in the Nutrition and Food Sciences, on Medical Nutrition Therapy and on Dietary Reference Intakes on Macronutrients. He served on the 2005 and 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. He recently completed a term on the FDA Science Board Advisory Committee to the Commissioner. He chaired the committee of the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that researched and defined the federal government’s guidelines for the prevention and treatment of obesity in 1998 and has just concluded membership on the Task Force that completed the NHLBI/AAA/Obesity Society Guidelines on Obesity in 2013.
His research focus is on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, obesity and diabetes. He has over 400 peer-reviewed publications. He is on the Steering Committees of the Diabetes Prevention Program, the LookAhead , the Life-Moms and the GRADE trials of the NIDDK.

Dr. Fco Javier Tinahones

Tinahones is Head of Service of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Hospitales Regional and Virgen de la Victoria de Malaga. He is tenured Lecturer of the Endocrinology and Nutrition in the Universidad of Malaga and Doctorate in Medicine from the Universidad of Cordoba. He is Co-ordinator of the Area of Cardiovascular Diseases, Obesity and Diabetes of the Instituto de Investigación IBIMA. He is Coordinator of the Program of Obesity and associate diseases of the CIBERobn and is the principal researcher of over 20 public competitive projects (national and European) and more than 70 clinical trials in the fields of diabetes and obesity.
Author of more than 300 publications in indexed Medical Journals (Nature, Lancet, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, American Journal Clinical Nutrition, etc.). He has a cumulative impact index of publications of over 1000. He has directed 18 Doctoral Thesis and has received the National Award to the best group track record of the SEEN and several awards of communications and research projects.
